[ Wherever in the world he happens to be, is where this letter shall find him. The sheets he will pull from the envelope are wisp-thin, the kind of paper that cannot be saved once a spark has caught it. This is how they communicate—when distance separates them and the risk of walls embedded with the ears of a corrupt government is too great to risk a phone call. She writes to him with a frequency she has never afforded anyone else; not even her father. ]
My Dearest Friend,
I hope you are well when this letter finds you, as I hope you are at every moment before and after. You are in my thoughts, always, and my mind is only quieted with the knowledge that you would let me know if you had any need. My position is not without power, and of all that I desire; lessening your burden is always among them. Please, write me back of your health and yourself, my friend.
On the topic of my latest venture, it would seem my hopes have become the hopes of many. What once was only words, may soon be more. No longer will this world limp along, like a wounded dog in search of respite. Change, my friend, is upon us, like a wet wind over the desert, and we are the ones prepared to bring it. For the betterment—of these people, this city, and everything that it provides the foundation for.
[ For hours he sat hunched over, the letter held so carefully between his fingers as he fought not to tear the delicate paper. Eventually he would have to burn it, ensure that all of the words were destroyed for the safety of not only them but their desires in this world but that didn't stop him from finding solace in that nearly sheer sheet of paper.
Picking up a lighter he lit the paper on fire. Even as the edges scorched his fingers, he still held it until her words were gone. Gone but she was not and they assured him she was safe. That was enough. For now.
Pulling out a spiral notebook, he picked up a ball point pen and considered his words for a long time before putting them down on paper. They were written carefully, print letters with tiny, neat penmanship. ]
My dearest friend:
You are missed every moment we are apart. The logic of what we must do never escapes me but that does not mean I do not miss being there where I can protect you.
I am doing well. As well as I might be when I can not be there to watch your back. You are strong, so strong. You have always been my strength. It is for you that I would endure anything but I am well the moment this letter finds me, as well as before and after.
I look forward to the culmination of your desires and all I might do to see it through. Please, do not rush forward though. Safety, your safety, is the most important thing in my life.
